a spot at the table

It’s Thanksgiving weekend and we’ve come upon another first. If you follow this blog you’ll already know I’m talking about my Dad. This is the first Thanksgiving without him.

I don’t know that we’ve ever, as a family, made a big deal of Thanksgiving day. Sure we got together and likely had a turkey or some form of one, but I don’t know that we ever made a big deal of it.

For me, I tend to reflect upon the year or the current circumstances I’m in and think about the things I’m thankful for. But I also hope that I do a good job year-round with displaying my gratitude for the people, places and things that I value.

I’m very, very grateful for my health and the health of my loved ones. If this year has taught me anything, it’s that things can change in an instant, and nothing can really prepare you for that sudden shift.

Every time I pass the hospital at night, I get a pang of guilt and pain in my chest to see all of the vehicles parked outside. I know that each of those vehicles holds a story (or more than one) of a loved one who is inside and wanting out. At the mercy of the system.

Every day that you open your eyes in the morning is a gift. It is truly and honestly that simple. Every day is another chance to do good – for yourself or someone close to you. I’ve seen and felt too much pain to keep giving a fuck about things that don’t matter. If it doesn’t bring me joy, give me peace, or make my life easier, why am I giving it my energy? Ask yourself that question, too.

Amongst the fall leaves;
M.
